How To: Flash Your Samsung Galaxy S2 with KG5 Modem Firmware

Thursday, September 22, 2011 0 comments

After hearing about data connectivity problems for Samsung Galaxy S2 users in Singapore, particularly from M1 users, I did a Google search on the possible solutions for this particular issue.

To cut a long story short, there are only 2 threads that are worth taking a look at:

Hardwarezone Forum thread on the Samsung Galaxy S2 Data Connection Problem:

Official Guide to Flash your Samsung Galaxy S2 Firmware:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278

From the thread, I realise that there is a high percentage of favourable comments from people that have flashed their modem to KG5 from KF1 (stock version). They reported stable data connectivity and better performance in general after flashing the modem to KG5.

One easy and fast way to check what is the version of your modem is by:

Settings >> About phone >> Baseband version (stock is xxxKF1)

I am a SingTel user and honestly, I do not have much problems with my Galaxy S2 data connectivity stability or performance. However, there might be a possibility that this firmware can help to improve existing performance, and since there seems to be quite a number of disgruntled Android customers out there, I decided to test out the steps mentioned in the Official Guide from xda-developers to see whether there are any ambiguities or loopholes in the instructions.

I have lifted out the relevant steps and add on some additional screenshots so that it will be clearer.

  1. Get Odin v1.85 (Download link from the Official Guide here)
  2. Extract it to your desktop.
  3. You should get 2 files in the folder (odin3 v1.85.exe and Odin3.ini)

  4. Download KG5 firmware (Download link from the Official Guide here)
  5. Extract the Phone_I9100XXKG5.exe by double clicking on it.
  6. It will automatically extract the file and a new .tar file will be created (Phone_I9100XXKG5.tar). This is the actual file that Odin will be using.
  7. Reboot your phone to download mode. To get download mode simultaneously press theDown volume key+ Home button + press the power button until the phone reboot with a warning. You should see a warning asking you to press volume up if you want to continue or volume down to cancel, press VOLUME UP. You are now in download mode!
  8. Start Odin on your PC by clicking on odin3 v1.85.exe
  9. Choose ONLY Phone and Browse to Phone_I9100XXKG5.tar on your PC and select it. MAKE SURE under Option ONLY Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time is checked.
  10. Connect the USB cable and wait for the ID:COM section to turn yellow.
  11. The end result should look like the below:

  12. Click Start to flash
  13. Do not disconnect the cable or turn off the device, it will reboot when it finishes.
  14. The end result should look like this:

It will not wipe your phone if you flash as recommended.

Do a quick check after flashing to ensure that your baseband version is now xxxKG5.

PS: Another tip is that when you are downloading the file from the links given in the official guide, please choose Megaupload option. You will just need to wait for 1 min for the download to start and you will get the least amount of advertisement/spam windows.

Disclaimer: The steps above work for me and I must stress again that if you are not sure or not confident about this, please do not try to do this on your own. We cannot be liable for any faulty Samsung smartphone. Although different operators behave in different manners, there is always the danger of having a void warranty from this activity.
